It's nothing to be embarrassed about. Acne can happen anywhere, not just your face. Aside from our faces, our backs are another popular place to (unfortunately) get breakout. What makes it an even easier place to breakout is the fact that our backs are especially hard to reach when in the shower.
Even if you're someone with a beautifully clear back, having a back facial is a great way to exfoliate the dead skin on your back and to deeply moisturize the skin in that area. It's a great idea before a special event where you'll be showing your back or just before the start of bathing suit season.
Luckily for those of you who are having trouble with keeping your back clear, there are back facials to help solve that problem. Like other facials, back facials are a great way to purify and cleanse the skin to help rid it of any imperfections, not to mention they're incredible relaxing.
A back facial follows the same steps as a classic facial would. Your esthetician will start off by cleansing and exfoliating the skin. During this step, there will most likely be steam involved to help open the pores and loosen any impurities which will help your esthetician remove them. Some back facials may involve extractions to help rid the skin of imperfections. After extractions, you can slip into a deep relaxation with a back massage to help fight stress and improve circulation. Post-massage, a mask is applied. The final steps involve moisturizing your back to help keep it hydrated and looking/feeling healthy.
While some guests opt for the back facial at stressful times in their life, it's actually recommended that you see your esthetician regularly for a monthly back facial to work on your skin health. Believe it or not, the skin on your back is just as important as the skin on your face. Regular visits will help to reduce acne, dehydration and flakiness of the skin and also improve your mood/health since you'll be spending time relaxing regularly.
Ask your stylist or front desk coordinator for details about back facials. This month at Serene Salon & Spa, we are offering a 60-minute back facial for $70. Serene Rewards members will also receive 100 bonus points. Back facials at Serene are available Tuesday thru Saturday with Wendy or Kristen.
For many of our guests, hair color fades a bit faster when it comes to the warmer months. While it might sound nice to bake in the sun for the day, it won't do your hair any favors. Aside from making your hair feel more dry and coarse, the sun also aids in fading your hair color (which no one wants). We've put together a few great tips from our stylists to help keep your hair in the best shape (and color!) when the weather starts to warm up.
Speak to your stylist about adding on a Botanical Hair Therapy Conditioning Treatment to your color service to keep your hair healthy so it holds onto the color longer and keeps the hair looking and feeling nourished. After receiving your color service, make sure to wait at least 48 hours before washing your hair to let it settle in better.
Make sure that you're washing with cooler water and not shampooing everyday. Although it can be a hard habit to kick, shampooing everyday isn't great for your hair because it will strip your hair of it's natural oils. To keep your hair looking clean, opt for the Shampure Dry Shampoo between shampoos. This will help disguise the oils in your hair and make it look freshly washed again. When you do shampoo, make sure that you're using a color-safe shampoo like our Color Conserve Shampoo & Conditioner.
When it comes to products, you'll want to use products that will help to preserve the color and health of your hair. Aside from using a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner, you want to use a leave-in conditioner to keep your hair strong and in good health to prevent it from losing color. Our Color Conserve Daily Color Protect is a popular option for doing just this.
After you've applied your products, be careful when styling. Don't put your curling iron or flat iron on full blast even though sometimes you want to in order to get the job done quicker. Think of it like a dryer that you use to dry your clothing. What happens when it's too hot in the dryer? The colors of your clothes fade. Guess what happens to your hair when you styling products are up too high? Yup, you guessed it.
In The Sun
This next tip is essential when you're going to spend the day in the sun. Aveda created a sun care line especially for hair and body to keep it protected from the sun, chlorine and salts. To protect from the sun, opt for the Sun Care Protective Hair Veil. It's basically like applying an SPF to your body, but for your hair. You can also include the Sun Care Hair and Body Cleanser to remove salts and chlorine and keep your color at it's best after you spend the day by the pool or at the beach.
All the products mentioned are available at Serene Salon & Spa for purchase. Ask your stylist or the front desk for more details.

Many people make the mistake of using the same products throughout the entire year. Especially if you live in New England, it's incredibly important to change your products with the change of the seasons. Aside from changing the products you're using, many of our guests also love to change up their look during the warmer months.
When it comes to hair, spring and summer are the perfect seasons to change up your look. Many of our guests love to go darker or cooler for the cooler months then add in some warmth and lighter tones during the warmer months. Right now, balayage is all the rage.
Many of you are probably reading this saying "What the heck is balayage?" No worries, we get that a lot. To get technical, the word balayage actually is a French word that means "to sweep" or "to paint". It's a great way to get the sun-kissed, natural-looking tones in your hair in a way that is soft and has less noticeable regrowth lines since balayage does not go all the way up to the roots. Think back to when you were young and just from being in the sun, you were left with beautiful, natural highlights throughout your hair.
Another reason that balayage is just plain amazing is because everyone's is different. Since balayage is actually hand-painting on the hair, yours will always be different from the next person's. It also gives the stylists a great opportunity to customize your highlights exactly how you want them.
Gone are the days of having super dry winter skin (or at least we hope so, right?). While your skin might be more balanced in spring and fall, summer seems to be the time when skin gets a bit more oily than it does in other seasons. While those with dry skin might not be phased by the idea of oily skin, in reality, it's just as hard to manage and balance as dry skin is.
Luckily, Aveda has created some incredible products that will do wonders to keep your combination skin balanced during the warmer months. Meet the Botanical Kinetics line. This is Aveda's basic line of skincare. It's main focus is to keep your skin clean, hydrated and get it back to balance. In the Botanical Kinetics (or BK as we like to call it) line, there is a system for both normal to dry skin and normal to oily skin, which many people opt for in the summer months.
For combination/oily skin in the summer months, an exfoliant is a must. This simple, easy-to-use exfoliant is a great way to get rid of dead skin cells, dirt and oil on the surface to prevent any future breakouts and keep oil at bay. You may also love Aveda's Toning Mist. This mist smells AMAZING and is a great tool to help keep your skin hydrated and balanced. Many of our guests even like to leave this toner in the refrigerator so that during the warmer months, they can tone their face with a cool mist anytime they're feeling overheated.
Of course, moisturizing is the key to balancing. Many of those with oily skin think that they don't need to moisturize and that it will only make them more oily. This, in fact, couldn't be further from the truth. You may be oily because you aren't moisturizing. Your skin needs that hydration or else it has to create it's own oil (and that's why your skin gets so oily!) and that oil can clog the pores and create breakouts in the future. The BK Hydrating Lotion is incredibly lightweight and feels amazing on the skin--perfect for those who don't want a heavy, thick cream on their face all day.
Speaking of warm weather, what better feeling is there than the sun hitting your skin when you step outside? It's true, the feeling is amazing, but that warm, burning sensation is actually terrible for your skin--unless, of course, it's protected. Aveda recently created Daily Light Guard, which is a daily SPF defense fluid that you apply after your moisturizer. Don't worry, even though it's an extra step, it won't feel heavy at all since it's incredibly light weight. It's great because this SPF is 100% mineral-derived and protects not only from the sun, but also from free-radical damage caused by the environment, including pollutants.
What's worse than having a caked on face in the warmer months? Well, nothing really. Primer, foundation, powder, bronzer, blush, highlight, the list goes on. It feels incredibly heavy and, frankly, pretty suffocating when it's 85 degrees outside. Aside from it being just plain annoying, having all these products on your skin while your face is so hot is just causing them to seep deeper into the skin and can potentially block your pores and cause breakouts.
This is what makes Aveda makeup so different. Since all of our makeup is lightweight, mineral-derived and as natural as possible, your makeup won't feel heavy or clog your pores. When it comes to foundation, we prefer to use Aveda's Mineral Tinted Moisturizer in the summer. Since it has an SPF and feels like nothing on your skin, it's a great option for some light coverage during your summer days. If you're one for a more matte finish, you can even dust some of our Translucent Powder over the top to set it in place for a long-lasting, velvet finish.
Aside from getting the right texture and finish, color is also a really fun factor that you can play with for different seasons. Summer is the perfect time to break out your warm, bright colors and rock them for the warmer months. We absolutely love the way our Peach Lights and Apricot Whisper Face Accents look on glowy skin in the summer.
Since many people like to keep their makeup more minimal in the summer, when it comes to the eyes, a little mascara and maybe some liner will do the trick. Pop on a bold lip and you'll be good to go!

How many of you hear the word "chakra" and your mind is instantly filled with the image of someone sitting Indian-style with their fingers together, meditating? Don't be embarrassed, that's the thought that many people first have. While meditating is amazing for the mind, body and spirit, we understand that it's not everyone's cup of tea. For those who want to get their body back in balance without taking the time to meditate, chakras will do just that.
So, what the heck are chakras? In simple terms, they're what make you feel balanced and complete. In more spiritual terms, they're seven spinning wheels of energy in our bodies that affect our health, well-being and beauty.
"The chakra system is the symbolic presentation of energies which exist in the body influenced by the subconscious mind. Yoga and meditation help you awaken those energies for the most balanced state of body, mind and soul." -The Drs. Upadhyay, Maharshi Bhardwaj Clinic & Research Centre, India
How do chakras work you ask? Well, each day you may experience a different chakra being out of balance. Sometimes it may be the same chakra each time a journey is done. On your "sensory journey", you'll be shown cards with representations of all seven chakras. As odd as it may sound, one will just pop out to you. It will call out to you and you just know that this chakra is the one that needs to be balanced. Your body is physically telling you.
Each different chakra represents a different type of balance. They each have different aromas, elements and colors as well. Once you find out which of your chakras is out of balance, you can follow the different techniques of meditation, mantras, breaths and nutrition that is recommended.
If you're looking to take a sensory journey to find out which chakra may be out of balance for you, we'd be happy to do this for you at your next appointment. If you're looking for a more instant option, you can head over to Mister Chakra and click on the "Take a Sensory Journey" button.

Scalp to Soul Care is a series of wellness tips and information that relates to hair, skin and body. We'll cover everything from dry to oily to sensitive scalps and skin in this series. First up, dry conditions!
Winter is finally (well, hopefully) over. While it wasn't the worst winter we've had, our skin, hair and body more than likely suffered in the dry air. Dry, flaky scalps and skin are more common than you'd think--especially during the colder seasons.
You may be experiencing dry conditions if you have:
- Think, dry and/or damaged hair
- Dry skin or scalp and/or fine lines and wrinkles
For those of you experiencing dry skin and or scalps, these tips will do wonders to help you become more comfortable and make your skin, hair, mind and body happier.

Another season, another amazing Aveda makeup collection. This Spring, Aveda created the "Indian Sunset" Limited Edition Spring/Summer 2016 collection. It includes four beautiful eye shadows, two super pigmented glosses, two creamy Nourish-Mint lipsticks, a great neutral pink lip liner and two bold eye liners.
Aveda Single Eye Colors
Eye shadow is one of the items that many women don't include in their daily routine. Some save it for nights when they're going out. Some decide not to mess with it at all because it seems complicated and too advanced. Luckily, Aveda eye shadows are great for anyone from a beginner (since they're give a nice, natural finish) to someone who is more advanced (because they're buildable and can be used to create super dramatic looks, if needed).
Lilac Glow: a light Lilac shade that would look lovely as a brow bone highlight or a lid shade with a little glow.
Amethyst Dawn: The perfect purple shade to brighten up your spring look; would look great as a lid shade.
Peach Nectar: Talk about the perfect crease color--especially for those with blue eyes or olive skin.
Desert Clay: To smoke out your eye look without going to dark, this warm brown shade is ideal.
Aveda Eye Definer
Whether you're a natural gal or someone who opts for a more glam look, eye liner is a staple in many women's makeup routines because of the definition they're able to achieve by using the product. We love Aveda liners since they're incredibly easy to work with and will stay all day.
Violet Blossom: For those who love a black liner, but want something a bit more bold and interesting.
Sea Fern: The perfect choice when you want to incorporate color into an otherwise neutral eye look.
Aveda Nourish-Mint Lip Liner
This step is one that many people forgo, but can make a world of difference when done correctly. Whether you're outlining your lips for the perfect lipstick application or over lining to make your lips look fuller, a lip liner is a must in everyone's makeup routine.
Spring Rose: This lip liner is the perfect option no matter what lip color you're going for. It's incredibly close to a natural lip color, so you can easily over line your lips and cover with lipstick or keep things natural and use this liner alone.
Aveda Nourish-Mint Rehydrating Lip Glaze
These glosses are the perfect mix between shiny, hydrating and pigmented. They have the pigmentation of a lip stain or lip stick, the hydration of a lip balm and the shine of a lip gloss. Talk about the perfect multi-tasker.
Cherry Nectar: If Taylor Swift could pick any Lip Glaze, chances are it would be this one. Obviously, it's the perfect red, but it also has a glossy finish that will make any lady's lips look fuller.
Rose Dusk: This lip glaze is the definition of "your lips but better". Toss this on with a little mascara and blush, and you're good to go.
Aveda Nourish-Mint Lipstick
We find that many neutral gals and those who are just getting into wearing a lipstick always fall in love with the Nourish-Mint lipsticks. Since they're so hydrating and not super pigmented, they give a nice satin finish on the lips and will leave you with just enough color to tell that you're wearing something.
Pink Peppertree: Are you used to simple neutrals and want something fun and unique for spring and summer? Look no further! This neon coral tone is one of Emma's favorites!
Sheer Clove: Brown-toned lipsticks are everywhere right now because the 90s beauty trends are making their way back onto our vanities. While this lipstick helps you stay up with the trends, it's not overpowering and doesn't make you look like you're stuck in the 90s, more like you chose to be there.
If you'd like to experience the Indian Sunset collection for yourself, make sure to make your appointment for our spring makeup event on Saturday, March 26th. You can book your 45-minute one-on-one session between 10am and 1:30pm for only $25. Space is limited. Call now to book: 413-322-9799.
